Fall’s Must-See Movies

To say I’m a movie buff is an understatement.  (I know way too much pop culture and not enough politics, but everyone has their thing, right?)  Every fall I get ridiculously excited because the most anticipated movies of the year begin to roll out.  I have compiled my list of this fall’s must-see movies below, enjoy!

1- The Wolf of Wall Street

Will someone give this man an Oscar already?  God, that dance clip in the trailer alone deserves one!  My heart will always go on for you, Leo.

2- 12 Years A Slave

Full Disclosure: I will most definitely sob my way through this movie and use a mountain of insanely tiny movie theater napkins as tissues along the way.

3- The Counselor

I’m on a Michael Fassbender kick right now.  Can you blame me?

Side note: both he and Brad Pitt are also in 12 Years A Slave — a sign that the two of them make for an awesome cast.

3.5- Gravity

I’m still on the fence about this one.  Every time I watch the trailer, my palms begin to sweat, my anxiety goes through the roof, and my breathing begins to sound like Sandra Bullock’s.  If I do this during the trailer, I’m not sure I can sit through the remaining hour and a half (or really if the people next to me in the theater could put up with me for that long), but I might just put on my big girl panties and tell myself it’s just a movie after all.

What’s on your must-see list this fall?

Mid-Century Modern Design, My North Star

Whenever I’m feeling lost in a sea of stale and unoriginal designs I know I can always trust the smart simplicity of Mid-Century Design aesthetic to guide me to safety.  Not safety as in beige or “resale value”, but safety in finding my stride as a designer and creating spaces that are fresh, yet timeless.
I have curated my favorite modern pieces that emulate the smart and sleek lines of Mid-Century Design to pay homage to this sacred era.  While a monochromatic palette is a great place to start, I love to blend unexpected elements like cool grey upholstery with warm wood and brass tones.  I also love a pop of color to brighten a space (and to elude to the Mid-Century vibe) and have done so with pillows, upholstered ottomans, and a dip-dyed rug.  All of these items are from a blend of vendors to create an obtainable hi-low vibe for any consumer.
Mid-Century Modern
Light Fixture: Duh, I’m obsessed with brass, ok?
Sofa: West Elm, you are killin’ it in the Mid-Century Department.  (And every department if I’m being honest)
End Tables: See the brass comment above.
Mongolian Pillow: I can feel this pillow’s softness through the screen.
Cocktail Table: YUM.
Ikat Pillow: This is formal without being too serious.
Acrylic Wingback Chair: Oh. My. God.  Seriously??  Why don’t I own this?!  (oh yeah, I’m poor)
Benches: These could live under the cocktail table if you were short on space and provide extra seating for entertaining.
Rug: I’m obsessed with dip-dyed anything.  Oh and West Elm.
I hope you enjoy Mid Century Modern design as much as I do and use this as inspiration next time you are feeling discouraged in a world of mundane, granola design.  Happy shopping.

Fall Playlist

My music taste has stayed pretty much the same since seventh grade.  Not to toot my own horn, but I’ve been into alternative/hipster music long before it was “cool” and I’ve had relatively un-trendy music taste for years now.  (I know, my hipster way of thinking annoys me too)

When the seasons start to change, I turn to moodier music that reflects the shorter days and the cooler weather.  Although I’ve been into alternative and indie rock for several years now, this genre has shifted to a slightly more electronic approach in recent years and I can’t complain.  Here is this season’s compilation of songs hand picked by yours truly, enjoy.

1- Team//Lorde — She’s killin’ it right now.  And only 16 to boot…puts me to shame.

2- Pretty Boy//Young Galaxy — Love them and this song.

3- Pompeii//Bastille — Obsessed with this guy’s voice.

4- Sweater Weather//The Neighbourhood — Ok so sometimes my music turns mainstream.  But can you blame me for liking this song?

5- Little Letters//Paper Airplanes — This girl’s voice is so hauntingly beautiful.

6- Lies//CHVRCHES — This one definitely falls in the electronic indie category, but it makes it no less awesome.

7- This Is What It Feels Like//Banks — Told ya I was into moody music.

8- If So//Atlas Genius — This song is for fall drives with the windows down or outdoor runs.

9- Fall For You //Young Galaxy — They’re good enough to earn two spots.

10- Ways To Go//Grouplove — Their songs are so infectious it’s hard not to sing along.

11 The Wire//Haim — I seriously listen to these ladies everyday…I might have a problem.

12- Lifetime//Noah and the Whale — Reminiscent of The Talking Heads, what’s not to like?

13- Hearts Like Ours//The Naked and Famous — This song just feels like fall.

14- Pioneers//The Lighthouse and The Whaler — Apparently I’m on a whale kick.  But really I just like this song.

15- Bones//MS MR — This one’s awesome.  Listen to it twice, you can thank me later.
